HISTORICAL OVERVIEW

Smithsonite was named in honor of James Smithson, the British mineralogist and founder of the Smithsonian Institution. It was historically confused with hemimorphite until chemical analysis distinguished the two. Known as “Zinc Spar,” Smithsonite has been valued both as an ore of zinc and as a collector’s mineral. Spiritually, it is considered a gentle stone of soothing energy, emotional healing, and compassion, often associated with calming stress and nurturing self-love.
